A cleaning expert has revealed some common blunders people make while tidying their homes, including a significant one involving the washing machine. Christy, known on TikTok as @christyytiktok, shared a tip for deep cleaning your washing machine without resorting to harsh chemicals.
In a recent TikTok video, Christy demonstrated an easy trick to keep your washing machine in excellent condition and ensure your clothes come out smelling fresh. The key ingredient? Just a bit of white vinegar, reports the Express.
For those experiencing unpleasant odours or subpar performance from their washing machine, Christy recommends running an empty hot cycle with vinegar once every month. She advised: "Run an empty hot wash with vinegar once a month for your washing machine to work properly (and your clothes smell fresh)."
According to The Spruce, both distilled white vinegar and cleaning vinegar are ideal for a thorough washing machine cleanse due to their acetic acid content. This acetic acid is effective at breaking down various mineral build-ups in the machine's drums and pipes.
Moreover, it combats bacteria and fungi responsible for undesirable scents. Vinegar acts as a natural deodoriser.
Additionally, vinegar serves as a natural disinfectant, adept at removing accumulated dirt, detergent remnants, and mildew from the drum and seals thanks to its acidic nature. This eliminates bacteria and dissolves mineral deposits inside the appliance.
Nonetheless, it's important to use vinegar sparingly to avoid damaging the washing machine's rubber components. Christy's video has racked up over 81,400 views, 4,964 likes, and 89 comments.
One user, Sunset, asked: "How much vinegar would you recommend in the washing machine?"

Christy responded: "Add 1-2 cups of white vinegar in the detergent dispenser or directly into the drum."
Others praised the tips, with Emma commenting, "These are so helpful," and Georgia saying, "Loved this thanks for the reminder."
