A man stole a handbag and fraudulently used a bank card before later burgling the home of a vulnerable elderly woman while drunk. Ian Robson targeted multiple shops with the stolen card before later entering a woman's home on the Leicestershire border where he had been employed as a gardener.
The 41-year-old snatched a handbag from a seat outside the Sir Nigel Gresley pub, in Market Street, Swadlincote, on Thursday May 9 last year. He then embarked on a spending spree, making several fraudulent transactions at local shops using the bank card from the stolen bag, Derbyshire Police said yesterday (Tuesday, February 25).
On Tuesday, July 30, Robson entered the address of an elderly woman in Brook Street, Hartshorne, near the Leicestershire border, where he began rifling through drawers. Police revealed he had been hired to do gardening work at the property but instead entered the house intoxicated before being disturbed by the homeowner.

Robson was arrested and remanded into police custody on Saturday, August 10 following the incidents. He appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Monday, August 12, where he admitted one count of theft and six counts of fraud by false representation but initially denied the more serious burglary charge.
Robson, of Small Thorn Place, Swadlincote, was subsequently remanded into prison custody to await trial at Derby Crown Court. On Wednesday, February 5, he admitted his guilt on the burglary charge with a last-minute plea change at court, according to police.
Robson was jailed for 25 months.
